Computer Gaming Lab -- BobVitale? - 14 Dec 2007

Table of Contents

Objective

Design and develop a signature lab for the new gaming degree program. Dean Kang requested the lab be a showcase as it is drawing a good deal of attention and some very top students. We will be using Baskin Engineering Room 368, 368A & 368B for the lab.

Status

8/21/07-
Air conditioning - being installed
Lighting systems - under final design by Prof Cuthberth
Furniture - phase 1 ordered from Steelcase, phase 2 - post/beam in final design
Painting - need color scheme
Equipment - list not finalized

Lab Layout

Overall Layout

Post & Beam Area

Post and Beam is a frame work to section off portions of the room into 'enclaves' of work. Similar to office partition but using lightweight fabrics to section off portions. The fabrics would not block sound or much light.

*Description of Post & Beam from Marilyn Davies, PBI/Steelcase*
The stations are a product called Topo, made by the Steelcase company Metro. They are self contained with work surfaces on each side or singles. The Post & Beam is an Architectural Steelcase product that will divide the space into separate collaborative areas. There will be Storage provided along the walls between the posts, for their gaming boxes called Duo. They can hang LCD screens from the beams (there is a picture of this application in the Furnishing proposal). There will be some couches of various sizes.

We have made sure to keep the clearance open in front of the Mechanical Room Door. Most all of the electrical and data access will be from the existing conduit along the wall.

Fire Marshall (Chuck Hernandez) comments on post & beam (8/21/07)

Comment #1 -- The fabric material on all the steel case furniture (partitions)shall meet a class III flame spread. Any curtains or drapes shall be made of non-combustible materials or made in a flame retardant condition approved by the State Fire Marshal, (a flame retardant certificate is required.)
Response #1 Janine PBI - All fabrics pass the minimum technical Bulletin 117 and 133 with one exception the Zocalo fabric. Zocalo did pass 117 and I have requested it be tested for the Technical Bulletin 133 and should receive results soon.
Comment #2 -- All electrical panels shall be accessible. A minimum of 3-0 feet is required in front of the panels.
Response #2 Bob Vitale - SOE
Comment #3 --All furnishings in the game room shall meet a minimum Technical Bulletin 117 and preferably (recommended) Technical Bulletin 133 of the California Bureau of Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation
Response #3 Jainine PBI - All fabrics pass the minimum technical Bulletin 117 and 133 with one exception the Zocalo fabric. Zocalo did pass 117 and I have requested it be tested for the Technical Bulletin 133 and should receive results soon.
Comment #4 -- I need some building reference points on the floor plans. I need to know the location of the main exit corridor and the adjacent rooms so that I can view the entire exit system.
Response #4 Bob Vitale - SOE
Comment #5 -- Are you having a third party structural engineer review the post and beam installation?(regarding seismic zone).
| Response #5 Bob Vitale - SOE. The Steelcase installation instructions for seismic zones are listed below. Janine -PBI; I sent the Post & Beam design to Michael Abson of Steelcase to analyze design and verify that it meets zone 4 requirements.
