Bungie Cord Bracing for Shelves
This method has been used by PBSci Woodshop for various shelves in chemistry labs. It has been accepted by the fire marshal in the past to keep items on high shelves from falling off during earthquakes.

Two types of eye bolts are used -both Zinc Plated:
For through bolting;
Eyebolts -5/16" x 5" ( Eye bolt + 2 nuts and washers)
For solid material where through bolting is not possible or needed, such as cabinet face-frames
and solid wood shelf edges)
Eye lag screws- 1/4" x 5" for solid material

We use 1" black gaffers tape from
McMaster? Carr for the ends of the bungee
We use HDPP-9-BLK Heavy Duty treated black polypropylene bungee, and
galvanized clips from Superior Bungee Corporation.
Use 1" black gaffers tape on the ends of the bungees to keep it from unraveling
