Berman Lab Staff & Facilities Meeting
Date: ongoing
Location: BME Dept Offices
Attending: Berman, Hudson, Fonseca, O'Rourke, Derbin, Porter & Vitale

Meeting Summaries and Follow Up Notes

Item Room Description Notes
1 288/292 Gas to benches Instead of gas to the island benches, a single gas line will be extended from the fume hoods in 288 and 292 to the existing tables adjacent to the fume hoods in those rooms. Gas to the bench islands will not be required. If it is only possible to have one tap per line, the one in side the fume hood can be capped off. The outside contractor ESI will perform this task. Awaiting their quote.
      ---------------------------------------------
1A 288/292 Portable Bunsen Burners SOE facilities to find out if ok to use butane bunsen burners in the lab. These are the ones from fisher scientific, last 1.5hrs, contain 20cc of butane and are refilled using small disposable canisters. Microbiologist use flames to sterilize things. Also they boil water to stearlize equipment, however the butane bunsen burners likely don't have enough gas to boil much water, thus someplace in the lab is needed that has natural gas April 12 update: The safety officer in PB Sci says he has OK's their use. We have have sent a second email to EH&S asking for their position. April 16 update: portable butane bunsen burners are permitted by EH&S (email from Brent Cooley)
      ---------------------------------------------
2 288/292 Bio Safety Cabinets (BSC) move into 288 but do not unwrap until ceiling closed and new tiles installed. April 12 update: The PB Sci Machine Shop will move the heavy equipment into the labs. The precise new locations for the equipment coming over from Sinsheimer Rm 136 should be identified if they are not already on the floor plans
2A 288/292 BSC Vacuum lines are needed in the BSCs. April 12 update: Facilities will obtain a quote for this work.
2B 288 Shelving Shelving has been removed to make room for BSCs. Shelving above the remaining table on the south wall was removed by mistake
      ---------------------------------------------
3 288/292 Island Bench Drawers Install drawer lock for one draw per island bench.
      ---------------------------------------------
4a 201/205/288/292 Window Blind installation We have a quote for blinds in the four occupied labs at a cost of $2,794 including tax and installation
4b 288/292 Window Blind cleaning Blinds will need to be cleaned regularly. Blind cleaning costs may need to be passed onto Prof Berman's group as he is requesting more frequent cleaning than campus provides normally.
      ---------------------------------------------
5 288 move drawers Shift suspended drawers from one lab table to the table in the center of the south wall in 288.
6 288/292 shelves Place seismic restraint cords on all shelves. Use method used in PSB. Shelving lips are higher than shelves in past, however lab group feels more comforabable if bungie cords are there.
      ---------------------------------------------
7   cable locks Lock down two computers and two balances in the lab. BELS to provide cables and locks via recharge method. We will need to determine who needs the keys to the locks. The BELS staff has some standard padlocks but does not issue the keys. Berman lab staff to forward max/min cable size and lengths desired. Facilities will work with Kathryn to coordinate specifications and devices.
      ---------------------------------------------
8   C02 piping & regulator CO2 service piping to be in 3/8" copper lines. Make certain that there is sufficient pressure at the end of the runs. What is the pressure of gas required, what is the pressure in the cylinders at max and min values, what is flow rate. Update 4/19: Brent of Lab Equipment Co submitted a quote for a Sanyo CO2 MCO-100L tank regulator. An earlier email states that this model adjusts to a maximum of 15 PSI. Will this be sufficient to provide enough pressure to the farthest BSC? Switchover for sanyo incubator MCO-21GC- Brent K suggests the gas supplier install switchover. Brent K. not aware that multiple pieces of equipment will be served by a central CO2 system. Clarifying email communication will be discussed at 4/20 mtg. Will work with Praxair on system requirements.
      ---------------------------------------------
9   C02 low alarm Install an alarm to Rm 288 for CO2 depletion. Depletion should sound alarm noise in 288 and also go to physical plant or dispatch. Bob recommends that an additional monitoring CO2 cylinder pressures, gas lines and incubator operations and be run to a web page with trending. The site could also email lab staff when values get close to alarms points to ensure changeouts are done before an alarm is given. An alarm is generally a bad thing.
      ---------------------------------------------
10 288 Washable Ceiling Tiles Prof Berman provide an adequate specification on the ceiling tiles that he felt is adequate; Armstrong CeramicGuard? Fine Fissured. The vendor literature states they are used for surgical rooms. Be sure to get the ones that are cleanable, there are two types, one with holes (perferorated), one without. Randy to order. How will we get them installed? April 12 update: DPR, the contractor for Alts 2/3, will be asked for an estimate to purchase and install the tiles. In addition, a tile call Armstrong Humiguard Plus Cleanroom Border appears to be a better fit to Phil's rquirements, since the surface is flat in addition to being unperforated. This is the same ceiling that is installed in the Autoclave room. Update: 4/16/07 email to Kathryn: We have received the quote to install ceiling tiles in Rm 288. The cost is $3,543. If you want to put vinyl tiles in either of the small rooms as well (288A or 286), the cost will be an additional $431 for each. A PDF of the quote is attached. April 19 update: DPR obtained a quote for the wrong tile. The revised amount is approximately $6,400. This amt OK'd by Phil in 4/20 mtg.
      ---------------------------------------------
11 283 Ice Maker Group decided to house the ice maker in BE-283. A drain exists there. Randy explained the difference between air cooled and water cooled ice maker. The air cooled would expell heat to the room, leaving the room and adjacent hallwall with the waste heat. A water cooled unit would take the heat away via the condensing water, however the piping would need to be installed for it. Prof Berman decided on the air cooled unit. Ice maker requires in-line water filter on tap (potable) water. DI water is not required for ice maker. RP to initiate purchase order. 4/19 update: A dealer who works with UCSC frequentlly (Pelco) recommends a smaller machine than the one in PSB, the AFE 325. This machine is air cooled. Awaiting quote. This machine approved in 4/20 mtg.
      ---------------------------------------------
12 283 LN2 A liquid N2 dewar will be purchased by BME and placed in 283 for general use by all BME labs.
      ---------------------------------------------
13   Staff Breakroom on hold.
      ---------------------------------------------
14 288/292 Paint Blue Wall Blue walls in 288 and 292 painted the same color as the other walls. Work started on 4/20.
15 288 small table Small lab table for centrifuge against south wall needs to be ordered. Fisher Sci has 10-day shipping for some epoxy surface lab tables. 4/20 mtg: will use table now in 286. This table in turn needs to be replaced.
16   office/small equip move Facilities will handle the move of personal items, files, etc., as well as computers and light equipment. Data (computer account) request forms need to be submitted. The overall schedule should be discussed.
17   large incubator large incubator needs casters or a stand once its bottom has been painted. PB Sci Machine Shop is scheduled to do the painting. Kathryn to look for casters suitable for this model. If not available, will ask Machine Shop to fabricate.
18 all rms room security Phil would like to explore electronic access control system for labs.
19 fund sources non-SOE (startup) to be used for chairs and stools.
