The incubator fitting is a turret nozzle rather than hose clamp.

Email from Phil Berman, 6/22/07

Dear Randy,

I think we should go with the plan detailed in the attached email:. 2x2 array of gas bottles (four total), in line pressure gages, and "we terminate with a Swagelok quarter turn valve with a compression fitting, although a ball valve is also OK. The thread should be mated to a hose fitting, and vinyl tubing will be the last leg. The incubators probably have hose clamp fittings." (I think you examined the incubator fittings -can you verify its a hose clamp?).

We need to get this done ASAP.

Thanks,

Phil

Email from Praxair: Steve S. Randy, got some more information as I said I would on the volume of CO2 required.

Rule thumb is 1 incubator will use 1 CO2 cylinder in @45 days. Therefore 5 incubators will use 1 CO2 cylinder @ every 9 days.

You may want to use a 2 X 2 cylinder configuration to reduce the number of cylinder changeouts. 2 CO2 cylinders on each side would require on side being changed out roughly every two weeks.

We will have to quote an additional two pigtails to make this unit work this way if you so desire!

Any questions, please let me and Luis know. I will be in the Sacramento/Reno area for the next two weeks!

Notes on CO2 system discussion with Praxair, 6-13-07

I spoke with the Praxair Specialty Gas Equipment Manager (Steve Scagliotti) and told him that we want to meet with him. However, he is on the road for a full two weeks, so he suggested that he and I try to make some progress over the phone. We can also use email. I described our equipment and our need both for advice and for detailed specifications. Here are his comments.

In general, the gas volumes and pressures we need are low, which makes it unlikely that we will face any problems with total gas flow. 30 lbs of pressure should be enough for the system.

1. Switchover (in Rm 286): He recommends keeping it simple. The one that has already been specified by Luis at Praxair sounds OK to him.

2. Incubator connections and regulators: He said that most incubators have built-in regulators. I will check on that. In any case, he says that point of connection regulators are not necessary. He recommends that we terminate with a Swagelok quarter turn valve with a compression fitting, although a ball valve is also OK. The thread should be mated to a hose fitting, and vinyl tubing will be the last leg. The incubators probably have hose clamp fittings.

3. If we install 1/2" gas lines as mains, we will need to step them down to 1/4" piping at the termination points.

4. Copper piping: It should be oxygen cleaned and Grade K.

5. Even though we will not require pressure gauges in Rm 288, he recommends that we install a single in-line gauge (not regulator) where the piping enters the room just for quick checking.

6. Alarms. His only comment on alarms was to say that someone will need to check the cylinders every day regardless of whether they are alarmed.

7. Finally, given our low volume needs, he thinks each cylinder will probably last one month.

--end of email.

I| Item | Room | Description | Notes | 1 288/292 Gas to benches: (1) CO2 lines to Phil's lab 288 (2) BSC vacuum and CO2 connections (3) ice maker connections (4) table top gas connections. Ken Filice, the Physical Plant project manager assigned to this project will seek plumbing quotes from George Wilson Inc. after layouts have been finalized. (A separate quote for hookup of the autoclave has been received) June 12 meeting clarified requirements for gas and CO2 service. June 22 meeting: Phil would like a quote for nat gas to all four island benches (2 turrets per bench) in 292 & 288, along with the earlier nat gas configuration next to the fume hoods. He will approve funding up to $6k per lab and possibly higher.

--------------------------------------------- 2 Rm 202 autoclave Quote for autoclave plumbing connection received: $5,517.60. Quote for electrical hookup: not to exceed $1,718. 3 288/292 Island Bench Drawers Install drawer lock for one draw per island bench.

--------------------------------------------- 4a 201/205/288/292 Window Blind installation Order received by Advanced Blinds. Drawings showing location of blind controls sent in to Advanced Blinds on 5/18. Installation scheduled for June 6. Installation of longer controls June 18.

--------------------------------------------- 4b 288/292 Window Blind cleaning Blinds will need to be cleaned regularly.

--------------------------------------------- 6 288/292 shelves Place seismic restraint cords on all shelves. Use method used in Sinsheimer. Shelving lips are higher than in other buildings, however lab group feels more comfortable if bungee cords are there.

--------------------------------------------- 7 cable locks Lock down two computers and two balances in the lab. Facilities will work with Kathryn to coordinate specifications and devices. Done as of 5/25.

--------------------------------------------- 8 C02 piping & regulator Praxair has proposed regulators and switchover (manifold) costing $950.00. Praxair rep Luis Martinez. Plan tank delivery schedule around rate of use. Need to determine how long a cylinder of gas will last for 8 incubators. Brent Kolhede may be able to advise. Check with Praxair for alarm advice. Praxair has submitted new quote that includes remote alarm for $1,550 plus tax. June 13: Praxair visit to be scheduled.

--------------------------------------------- 9 C02 low alarm Install an alarm to Rm 288 for CO2 depletion. Depletion should sound alarm noise in 288 and also go to physical plant or dispatch. Bob recommends that an additional monitoring CO2 cylinder pressures, gas lines and incubator operations and be run to a web page with trending. The site could also email lab staff when values get close to alarms points to ensure changeouts are done before an alarm is given. An alarm is generally a bad thing. Check with Praxair for low gas alarm that is integrated into manifold. 5/18: Praxair has submitted new quote that includes regulators, switchover & remote alarm: $1,550 plus tax.

--------------------------------------------- 11 283 Ice Maker The Scotsman air cooled model AFE 325 flaker--arrived 5/16/07. P Will require water filter. The ice maker has signs of damage and rough handling. The vendor has agreed to replace it. Delivery date not yet known. June 12 meeting discussed new arrangement/configuration of sink and ice maker.

--------------------------------------------- 12 283 LN2 A liquid nitrogen-cooled container for samples will be purchased. Kathryn has details of an appropriate model. It will need to be alarmed. Praxair to be contacted for advice and a quote.

--------------------------------------------- 18 all rms room security Phil would like to explore electronic access control system for labs.

--------------------------------------------- 19 tables and chairs fund source start-up funds to be used. Arrived 5/29.

--------------------------------------------- 30 all rms Janitor service Facilities - determine what the service will be. See item 36.

--------------------------------------------- 31 Labs Biohazard waste Status: 5/4/07 EH&S says a medical waste contract exists for PBSci, Cowell Student Health Center and Long Marine Lab. Waste needs to be considered "Medical Waste", which is waste from research of or related to diagonsis or treatment of humans or animals. Biohazard waste (e.g. tissue cultures) are autoclaved and then can be tossed in dumpster. To dispose of medical waste, SOE needs to get a permit from SC County (UCSC already has 3), get added to the medical waste pickup and supply the red medical waste cans/bags. - talk with EH&S find out how to deal with waste, BME does not want to autoclave waste

--------------------------------------------- 32 Labs Lab Safety Meeting EH&S holding lab safety meeting May 17th. Session 1 at 9:30am on Science Hill or Session 2 at 2:30 at Long Marine Lab. Each BME lab should designate a safety rep and send them. This is the first meeting in 2 yrs.

--------------------------------------------- 33 288 BSL-2 Lab Certification EH&S says there is an institutional bio-safety committee. Bio-use authorization form?

--------------------------------------------- 34 Rm 202 glass washer Siemens water purifier installed, Lancer next. Quote for power connection has been requested from Kenner. June 12 2007 meeting: reconfiguration of autoclave, glass washer and water purifier discussed. Fire Marshal will be asked whether door on north wall can be locked, maybe with panic bar. Panic bar would require new door frame.

35 Rm 288 incubators Duplex outlets on backup power needed for incubators at south wall. South wall will have 3 sets of stacked incubators for total of six. Back up power need will be assessed in context of back-up requirements more generally. Large incubator on West wall does not need CO2 or backup power. June 12 meeting clarified backup power requirements.

36 RM 288 Cleaning Service Cleaning crew will be required to gown up.

37 288, 292 shelves Shelves over sink. To hold carboys?

39 202 autoclave Seismic restraints needed. June 8 Meeting with Michael Mason, Biology equipment technician, says autoclave does not need to be tied down.
