New UC Laboratory Safety Policies

Laboratory Safety Training  (effective October 31, 2013)

Summary:  Identifies minimum training requirements applicable to all workers. A lab safety training needs assessment and fundamentals of lab safety training shall be completed.  Based on the needs assessment, additional safety taining may be needed for specific hazardous work activities.  As of 10/30/13, the minimum training is the online Laboratory Safety Fundamentals Training.

Minors in Laboratories and Shops (effective October 31, 2013)

Summary:  Persons under the age of 18 years old are considered minors.  Special requirements must be satisfied for minors who enter any hazardous lab.  Minors under the age of 14 are not permitted in any hazardous lab unless part of an organized and supervised tour. 

Minors between the ages of 14 and 18 are allowed in lab settings only if (1) If they are students enrolled in courses listed in a campus course catalog or part of an approved and supervised tour or (2) They have written consent from their parents(s) or guardians(s) AND have recieved approporiate UC lab safety training AND agree to adhere to PPE requirements AND are at all times under the direct supervision of a qualified adult designed for this responsiblity.
