Glen Aug21 2007 message - approval of BME washroom mods

This is approved from the Dean's Office perspective, but Phil needs to confirm that this configuration in BE202 functionally satisfies his needs (unless he has already done so).

Dear Bob,

I think 2B is the way we want it. Have they actually seen the RO-DI Unit? I think it may actually be smaller than shown on their plan, and actually would be mounted above wheelchair height. I 've never seen a coldroom door opened more than 90 degrees by anyone (handicapped or otherwise). By removing the casework, plan 2B provides much more access than any of the other plans.

Therefore I suggest sticking with plan 2B.

Thanks for your help with this.

Bob,

We should plan that there will be two large carts that are dedicated to the kitchen area and that users will be bringing in one or two additional carts piled up with glass ware to be washed or autoclaved. There should be at least one shared refrigerator/ freezer to store media components. I suspect that the wall space dedicated to multiple freezers will actually be occupied by one fridg/ freezer and a parking space for user's glassware carts. People will need bench space to cover, wrap, and label items to be sterilized (~6'). There needs to be space for a couple of large trash cans: one for biohazard and non-hazardous waste. Individual investigators should not use the kitchen area to store their own research materials. Hopefully there will be sufficient space in the adjoining instruments rooms for personal freezers. Provided we have sufficient counter space (~4ft) it would be good to create a media and buffer prep space. This would consist of a balance, pH meter, stirring motors on the bench and shelving or cabinet to store chemicals and reagents used in buffers and media.

Thanks for moving quickly on this.

May 30, 2007 touring notes with Phil Berman

1 gas lines feeding cold rooms to be removed and capped at ceiling
2 cylinder rack to be removed.
3 Siemens water purification system to be moved to wall formerly occupied by cylinder rack. Filter pack enclosure to be raised off floor.
4 Autoclave to be moved as close to N wall as possible.
5 Glass washer to be moved north until its front is centered under the exhaust duct.
6 New options for the location of the ice maker will be developed, including the northeast corner and southeast corner of 202. Both these locations will require new drain and water service. Location of ice maker on a bench top is not an option. Investigation of existing ducting and piping on the 1st floor will be necessary. The drain line must miss the waffle web.
7 Reschedule installation of autoclave and glasswasher electrical and plumbing.
8 Access through door on north wall to change. It will be locked on the corridor side and unlocked on the inside. DPR says door swing limited to 100 degrees, so door stop may not be necessary once autoclave moves to left.

Follow up emails: Hi Randy,

Thanks for your list. I discussed the situation with my lab today and we have the following comments:

We think the position of the autoclave is a serious hazard, and it should not be next to the doorway. Therefore we need exchange the dishwasher and autoclave, so the autoclave in in the middle. We still would change the locks to allow egress from the door by the dishwasher and autoclave.

We could theoretically locate the ice machine on the end of the bench. .However we have to make certain that there is enough room for glasswasher and dishwasher carts to to pass and be stored. We may need to move the drying oven to the other end of the wall so that there is conveninet storage for the dishwasher carts. The folks in my lab will have a look at it today.
