Meeting Summaries and Follow Up Notes

Item Room Description Notes
1 288/292 Gas to benches Rough NTE request came in at $35K for 5 items; (1) Co2 lines in Phil's lab (2) BSC connections (3) Autoclave & glasswasher plumbing (4) ice maker connections (5) table top gas connections. Phil felt NTE request was too high priced and contractor should be given more explict instructions and come up with a firmer estimate. Randy explained that the estimate is a not to exceed amount, which means that the University will pay only for work performed. Instructions provided were sufficiently detailed for this method and were more explicit than is typical for such work. The private sector equivalent is called time and materials and is used when the contractor does not need architectural drawings in order to perform the work. \These buildout items to be paid by SOE/campus funds allocated to Phil's lab. However there was also some funds included for BME common equipment for installation of some of these items. Instead of gas to the island benches, gas lines will be extended to the tables adjacent to the fume hoods in 288 and 292. Gas service to the bench islands will not be required. Ken Filice, the Physical Plant project manager will seek quotes from George Wilson Inc. (A separate quote for hookup of the autoclave has already been requested.)

5 288 move drawers Shift suspended drawers from one lab table to the table in the center of the south wall in 288. It turns out that the suspended drawers are 30" wide and the suspended cabinets 36". This means they cannot be traded between tables but a 36" set of drawers could be ordered. 4/27/07 update: remove suspended cabinet to create knee space.
      ---------------------------------------------
6 288/292 shelves Place seismic restraint cords on all shelves. Use method used in Sinsheimer. Shelving lips are higher than in other buildings, however lab group feels more comfortable if bungee cords are there.

      ---------------------------------------------
8   C02 piping & regulator Praxair has proposed regulators and switchover (manifold) costing $950.00. Either ESI or Praxair will install. ESI to install CO2 piping to BSC and 3 other locations. 4/27/07 update: Praxair to install. Praxair tech or rep to be asked to visit campus to see lab, estimate gas usage rate, possible low CO2 alarm. Prax Air rep Luis Mendez. Plan tank delivery schedule around rate of use. CO2 system to be sized for four stacks of 2 incubators but will start with only 2 stacks of 2 (4 total). Need to determine how long a cylinder of gas will last for 8 incubators. Brent Kolhede may be able to advise.
      ---------------------------------------------
9   C02 low alarm Install an alarm to Rm 288 for CO2 depletion. Depletion should sound alarm noise in 288 and also go to physical plant or dispatch. Bob recommends that an additional monitoring CO2 cylinder pressures, gas lines and incubator operations and be run to a web page with trending. The site could also email lab staff when values get close to alarms points to ensure changeouts are done before an alarm is given. An alarm is generally a bad thing.

30 BME Labs Janitor service Facilties - determine what the service will be

31 BME Labs Biohazard waste Status: 5/4/07 EH&S says a medical waste contract exists for PBSci, Cowell Student Health Center and Long Marine Lab. Waste needs to be considered "Medical Waste", which is waste from research of or related to diagonsis or treatment of humans or animals. Biohazard waste (e.g. tissue cultures) are autoclaved and then can be tossed in dumpster. To dispose of medical waste, SOE needs to get a permit from SC County (UCSC already has 3), get added to the medical waste pickup and supply the red medical waste cans/bags. - talk with EH&S find out how to deal with waste, BME does not want to autoclave waste

32 BME Labs Lab Safety Meeting EH&S holding lab safety meeting May 17th. Session 1 at 9:30am on Science Hill or Session 2 at 2:30 at Long Marine Lab. Each BME lab should designate a safety rep and send them. This is the first meeting in 2 yrs.

33 BE-288 BSL-2 Lab Cert EH&S says there is an institutional bio-safety committee. Bio-use authorization form?
34 Rm 202 glass washer Siemens (water purifier) and Lancer to coordinate hook up. Purifier installed, Lancer next. Electrical power code constraints are being investigated by Ken Filice.
35 Rm 288 incubator Duplex outlets on backup power need to be added for incubators at south wall. Ssouth wall will have 3 sets of stacked incubators for total of six. Will be assessed in context of back-up power requirements more generally. Large incubator on West wall does not need CO2 or backup power.
