BE 202 BME Common Facility
This room holds facilities for Glassware washing, Glassware Drying, Autoclave. Ice Maker has been moved to BE-281 by request of Prof Berman. Interior to this facility exists a cold room (known as BE-202A).
Modifications and Adjustments to Facility
The design of BE-202 and purchase of larger washer and autoclave lead to personnel movement and interference problems in the BE-202 facility. The washer and autoclave when open did not permit safe access to the cold room or exiting from the cold room. To remedy this problem, several concepts were discussed for relocating the washer and autoclave, to moving doors and modification of a island bench system. The final concept was chosen by Dept Chair Berman, which is shown in the concept drawing below.
This concept has the following:
- locates the autoclave next to the cold room entry, which is the original location on plans for Alts2/3.
- locates the washer near the second exit from room. This moves hot steam from autoclave away from exit door.
- relocate electrical disconnects to North wall on opposite side of doorway. These need 3ft of clearance in front.
- removes half of center island bench and relocates the sink to side opposite from autoclave and dishwasher. This provides clearance space for personnel and carts to get by autocalve and washer to access the cold room.
- allows a space in the corner for the water purification system and a place to drive up a cart with water jugs to fill from filter system.
- develop counter space on South wall for media and buffer prep space. This would consist of a balance, pH meter, stirring motors on the bench and shelving or cabinet to store chemicals and reagents used in buffers and media. This counter space removes area that was orginial intended for refrigs & freezers. E-power outlets will need to be changed to standard power and alarm wiring for freezers removed. Dept Chair states faculty should operate freezers in their labs, see Phil June262007 message below.
- install a table in North-East corner for drying oven.
- some locations for freezers/refrigs are left avail on East Wall.
Status of Work
- 1/31/08 - requested LabWorks? to do startup
- 1/28/08 - electrical and plumbing installation underway - should finish soon.
To Do
- hookup washer & autoclave
- Do initial startup on autoclave & washer
- develop written operational procedures for autoclave + washer
- develop preventative maintenance schedule for autoclave + washer
-
- setup drying oven on new table.
BE-202 Reconfiguration Design & Construction Documents
Architectural & Overall Reconfiguration
The below are from GLP -Jack Emerson after discussions with Bob and Randy. Sketches 2B & 2C are after input by Phil Berman. Phil determined he liked 2B best as that option did not require relocation of the door which would add significant expense.
Casework Reconfiguration
Utility Reconfiguration & Equipment Reconfig/Hookup List
Center Island Area - (Prior to demolition of center island by ISEC)
Plumbing - Disconnect and remove sink fittings for cold water, hot water, DI-Water. Remove fittings. Disconnect sink drain line.
Electrical - Disconnect and ready for relocation to other side of "umbilical" or utility chase, two 4-gage 115V/20a outlets. Question: should we convert these outlets to GFI?
Center Island Area - (after reinstallation of center island by ISEC)
Plumbing - Reinstall sink fittings for cold water, hot water, DI-Water. Connect sink drain line.
Electrical - Relocate to other side of "umbilical" or utility chase, two 4-gage 115V/20a outlets. Question: should we convert these outlets to GFI?
Glasswasher Autoclave Area (can be done before or after center island modifications)
*Background*- Place Autoclave and Glasswasher in correct positions and connect to utilities. Move high purity water filter system (RO/DI), which is currently connected only to glasswasher final rinse, to also allow filling of larger (10L) jugs (carboys) that are on carts. Relocate water filter & reservoir to corner near cold room door. Large electrical switch box for autoclave is currently located in a position that leaves it exposed to lots of steam from Autocalve. Relocate electrical switch box to location outside of steam (suggest wall location near door of cold room).
Relocation - Swap existing location of autoclave and washer. Ultimately locations of these units should be as shown sketch below. See if PBSci Machine Shop can relocate but after RO/DI filter/reservoir is moved.
Glasswasher-202-Sketches-2B-2C.pdf: Glasswasher Sketch 2B & 2C
RO/DI System Relocation - Move RO/DI filter & reservoir system to North-West Corner of BE-202 as shown on site plan. This will require disconnection and lengthening of some plastic tubing lines for RO/DI filter system. The plastic tubing is of special cleaned type (need to determine). Look into having SOE BELS staff do this relocation with input from PBSci technicans.
Furniture - Get a small table or bench to hold Water filter (RO/DI) system.
Electrical - Relocate large electrical switch box for autoclave to outside of steam area. Connect Autoclave and Glasswasher to electricity per manufacturers instructions (see cut sheets posted on this wiki).
Plumbing - Connect Autoclave and Glasswasher to water & drain. Note the Lanser Glasswasher purchase P0279290, had $1500 set-aside for installation. The lien still existed as of 8/27/07.
